Exhibits
New Rochelle Art Association The New Rochelle Art Association, which began exhibiting in the (former) New Rochelle Library in the 1920s, presents three exhibitions in the library’s Lumen Winter Gallery each year. The Annual Open Juried Exhibition is held in mid-September until the third week in October and includes original works in oil, watercolor, graphics, mixed media, pastel, sculpture or crafts, including jewelry, basketry, fiber, ceramics and fine craft; plus digital media and photography by members and nonmembers. The Jules Bauer Award Show of work by exhibiting members has been presented in the library each June since 1980. The annual Adolph Grant Award Show, established in 1924, is also open to all exhibiting members of the Association.
New Rochelle Council on the Arts Founded in 1975 by New Rochelle City Council, the New Rochelle Council on the Arts is an arts advocacy organization that stimulates and encourages the study and presentation of the performing and fine arts. In addition to performances, film series, and other programs in various community venues, the NRCA presents an extraordinary art or historical exhibition in the library’s Lumen Winter Gallery each March.
African American Art and Cultural Appreciation Council The African American Art and Cultural Appreciation Council is a local volunteer organization that exists to promote, encourage, disseminate and highlight the rich historical and cultural experiences of the African-American Diaspora. Each February the organization presents an exhibit of works by prominent African-American artists in the library’s Lumen Winter Gallery, and a series of programs and performances to complement the exhibit.
Our Children, Our Artists Since 1980, art created by children in New Rochelle City School District schools have exhibited in the Lumen Winter Gallery and Community Gallery during the month of May. Works by children in the primary schools are exhibited for the first two weeks; and works by those in the secondary schools are exhibited the second two weeks. Receptions and awards ceremonies are held for both divisions.
Other Exhibits During the few times the Lumen Winter Gallery is not being utilized for annual exhibits, the library presents shows related to local history as well as exhibitions by photography clubs, artists’ cooperatives, and, on rare occasions, by individual artists. Those who wish to be considered for solo shows must submit samples of their work to the Library Art Review Committee, which is coordinated by the Community Relations Office (632-7878, ext. 33 or 34).
